I once bought so much of it at one time that one of the wheels on my shopping cart collapsed on the way to the checkout counter. I couldn’t detect any performance difference between that ammo and factory Gold Medal target loads. Some of the best I have used was the Federal “All Purpose” ammo that WalMart was selling in sleeves of four. Promo ammo varies all over the place as to quality. There are all sorts of reasons, some good, some bad. But it does make sense to figure out just how cheap ammo got that way. Thank you.įew things are dearer to my heart than cheap ammo, unless it’s an open bar at a sorority house. Should I be concerned about these unusual sounding reports from a ballistics standpoint (assuming factory ammo is fundamentally safe)? Have you heard any reports (no pun intended) from the field regarding the suitability of these promo-quality target loads for practice? Please advise at your convenience. From my vantage point behind the butt of the stock, I couldn’t hear or feel (recoil-wise) anything unusual, so they weren’t “squib” loads. However on several occasions, the puller has told me that my ammo occasionally produces unusual sounding reports.
I seem to score about as well with them as with any other load. Over the last couple seasons, I’ve shot through eight cases of the Remington “Gun Club” loads Remington’s version of the promo target load.
At that rate, shooting factory ammo doesn’t cause a budget crisis, but those promo target loads offer a pretty attractive savings none the less. I shoot 16 yard trap for fun, and I only shoot about 1,800 rounds per year. I no longer reload, because I live in a small condo and don’t have the storage space for a reloading press, hulls, wads, etc. They all tend to feature cheaper components (especially the hull) and retail for about $18.00 per case less than the manufacturer’s top of the line target load. I think this started with the Federal “Top Gun” line.
